#20 Son of Rambow

Son of Rambow (2007)

Dir: Garth Jennings

“No Jay, it’s not a sequel to Rambo”

My friend was quite disappointed with this film, apparently he had watched it expecting a sequel to the Rambo films, but rather he saw a charming British film about two boys in the 1980’s who become friends and make a film together… or at least that’s what I got from it!

The film follows Will and his friend Lee Carter, two boys with opposite upbringings. Lee is always in trouble, doing what he wants in the absence of any parents, while Will has a strict upbringing and isn’t allowed to watch television. Thus, when he sees his first film, 1982’s ‘First Blood’ it gets his artistically creative mind going, and the two lads make a sequel/homage to the film for submission into a young film-making competition.

The film has a lovely nostalgic view, obviously strongly inspired by the writer & director Jennings (possibly better known for 2005’s ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’). I often enjoy films that feature creative low-budget filmmaking, and this had some brilliantly funny moments as the boys re-created action effects on a shoestring budget.

So, no, it’s not a sequel to Rambo, it’s a light-hearted and genuinely funny story about friendship and the power of imagination.
